José Maria received his Ph.D. in Gynecology Molecular Biology from the Federal University of São Paulo with Northwestern Medical School in 2002. He began his career at the University of São Paulo as an Associate Professor in 2013. He received a NAMS (North America Menopause Society) award related to phytohormone effects on the postmenopausal women in 2008. His research program has emphasized applications of sex hormones on the human vaginal microbiome and he established a collaboration between University of São Paulo and REM Analytics SA (Switzerland) for evaluating the microbiome in postmenopausal women in 2018. He is the editor-in-chief of RAMB (Brazilian Medical Association Journal) and Associate Editor of Clinics.
